HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA TO JAPAN
Obtaining a visa to Japan is an important step for anyone planning a trip to this amazing country. For citizens of Ukraine, the visa application process is mandatory, as there is no visa-free regime between Ukraine and Japan.
1. Determine the type of visa
The first step is to choose the right type of visa. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you can apply for one of the following visa categories:
- Tourist visa — for short-term trips, including for recreation, excursions or visiting relatives.
- Guest visa — for those planning to visit relatives or friends in Japan.
- Business visa — for business trips, participation in exhibitions, conferences or business meetings.
- Student visa — for people planning to study in Japan at universities or language schools.
- Work visa — for employment in Japan based on a contract with a Japanese employer.
2. Preparation of necessary documents
Once you have decided on the type of visa, the next step is to prepare the necessary documents.
- Submission of documents
After all the documents are prepared, you need to submit them to the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine or a consulate in another country if you are abroad. Documents are submitted personally or through a proxy.
- Visa application and waiting for a decision
After submitting your documents, your documents will be reviewed by the Embassy of Japan. The visa application process usually takes 5 to 10 business days, but it is recommended to submit your documents at least 2–3 weeks before your planned travel date. Depending on the type of visa, the consulate may request additional documents or conduct an interview.
5. Obtaining a visa
Once your visa is approved, you will receive a visa in your passport. Make sure all the details on the visa are correct and you are ready to travel.
WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED TO APPLY FOR A VISA TO JAPAN
1. Passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months after the planned date of return from Japan.
2. Completed application form. The application form is filled out in English or Japanese. It can be obtained from the website of the Embassy of Japan or at the consulate.
3. 2 color photos 4.5 × 4.5 cm in size, taken no more than 6 months ago.
4. Confirmation of the purpose of the trip
- For a tourist visa: confirmation of hotel reservation or travel plan.
- For a guest visa: an invitation from relatives or friends in Japan (in writing) along with a copy of the inviting person's passport.
- For a business visa: invitation from a Japanese company, contract or invitation letter.
5. Confirmation of financial capacity. Bank statement for the last 3–6 months or a letter from your job confirming your ability to cover the costs of your trip.
6. Copies of tickets and reservations. Copies of your return ticket and confirmation of hotel or accommodation reservation for the entire period of your stay in Japan.
7. Certificate from the place of work (for a business visa). A confirmation letter from an employer or company in Ukraine confirming your employment.
8. Health insurance. Insurance for the entire period of stay in Japan (this may be a requirement for some types of visas).
Additional documents may be required depending on the type of visa:
- For a student visa: an invitation letter from the educational institution.
- For a work visa: a copy of the contract with the Japanese employer and a work permit (Certificate of Eligibility — COE).
