Data Protection Officer (DPO) — is an authorized person responsible for compliance with the company's privacy and personal data protection policy.
The DPO oversees all processes related to the processing, storage and transfer of personal data, and also acts as a contact person between business, government regulators and data subjects.
According to Articles 37–39 of the GDPR, the appointment of a DPO is mandatory, if:
- the company carries out large-scale processing of personal data;
- The main activity of the company is related to monitoring the behavior of individuals;
- business processes special (sensitive) categories of data;
- this is provided national legislation EU member states.

GDPR provides for strict sanctions for violations of personal data processing rules — up to 20 million euros or 4% annual turnover companies (depending on the severity of the violation and whichever amount is greater).
